The original He-Man toys are Mattel’s Masters of the Universe action figures, first sold in the spring of 1982. The first wave had eight figures, Battle Cat, two vehicles and Castle Grayskull. The line came before the cartoon, which Filmation launched in September 1983, and Mattel kept releasing new waves until 1987, with the last European releases in 1988.

This is the He-Man hub in our 1980s cartoon collectibles section. It covers the toy line and the show as a whole. The He-Man characters guide lists each main figure with its first release year, and Skeletor has a page of his own.

Which figures were in the first 1982 wave?

Mattel designed the line in 1981 and shipped it in the spring of 1982. Each figure came with a mini-comic that told the story before any cartoon existed. Collector checklists from The Toy Collector’s Guide and ActionFigure411 agree on the first year:

Type 1982 releases
Heroic Warriors He-Man, Man-At-Arms, Stratos, Teela
Evil Warriors Skeletor, Beast Man, Mer-Man
Neutral Zodac
Beast Battle Cat
Vehicles Battle Ram, Wind Raider
Playset Castle Grayskull

New waves followed every year. The 1983 wave added Evil-Lyn, Trap Jaw, Tri-Klops, Faker, Man-E-Faces, Ram Man and Skeletor’s cat Panthor. Orko and the Snake Mountain playset arrived in 1984.

How long did it last? Wikipedia’s history of the franchise says Mattel released waves of figures, creatures, vehicles and playsets every year from 1982 to 1987, and the final overseas releases came from Europe in 1988. Mattel’s own era guide dates the original line from 1982 through 1988. Late pieces such as Laser-Light Skeletor, which He-Man.org records as a 1988 Europe-only figure, are part of the vintage line too, even though they were never sold in the US.

What makes a vintage figure complete?

A loose figure is “complete” only when every part that came on the card is still with it. Before buying, check:

  • the weapon or weapons (Skeletor, for example, came with the Havoc Staff and a sword)
  • removable armor, harnesses and belts, which come off easily and get separated
  • the mini-comic, if the seller calls the figure complete with paperwork
  • paint on the face, boots and trunks, which wears on the most-played figures
  • the action feature still working, such as Skeletor’s spring-loaded waist twist for a “power punch”

A carded figure is judged on the card instead: an unpunched hanger hole, a clear, uncracked bubble and no creases.

How does the 1983 Filmation cartoon fit in?

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was a Filmation series based on the Mattel line. It aired in first-run syndication from September 1983 and ran two seasons of 65 episodes each, 130 in all. Reruns stayed in syndication until 1988, when USA Network picked up the show and aired it until September 1990.

The order matters for collectors: the toys came first. Wikipedia’s history of the series notes that it was commissioned after the FCC relaxed its limits on toy-based programs, which opened the way for a show built around an existing toy line.

The series has come out on home video several times. BCI Eclipse issued DVD sets in 2005 and 2006, Mill Creek Entertainment released the show from 2011, and Universal Pictures put out a complete series set in 2019. This site covers the toys rather than the discs.

Why we list no end date for the show

Reference sources disagree on when the last first-run episode aired. Wikipedia’s infobox gives December 7, 1984, while its own text and Wikidata point to 1985. Until two reliable sources agree, we describe the run by its 130 episodes.

Castle Grayskull and Snake Mountain

The two big playsets are the line’s best-known pieces. Castle Grayskull came out with the first wave in 1982 as the heroes’ fortress. The Toy Collector’s Guide lists its parts: an opening drawbridge, a combat trainer, an armory with weapons, a trap door, a throne, a ladder, a flag and a laser cannon. Snake Mountain, Skeletor’s headquarters, followed in 1984.

Large playsets rarely survive with every piece. Flags, ladders and small weapons go missing first, and stickers peel or fade. A boxed set with its inserts is a different purchase from a loose one; judge each against a parts list for that playset.

A short note on the 2026 film

A live-action Masters of the Universe film, directed by Travis Knight, opened in US theaters on June 5, 2026, released by Amazon MGM Studios. It is a new story, separate from the 1983 cartoon and the 1982 toys this page covers.

What has Mattel made since the original line?

Mattel has returned to the brand several times. These are the main collector lines, dated by Mattel’s own era guide and toy press coverage:

Line Started What it is
Masters of the Universe (200X) 2002 Toy line made alongside the 2002 animated series
Masters of the Universe Classics 2008 Collector line of updated figures
Masters of the Universe Origins 2020 5.5-inch figures in the vintage style, Walmart exclusive in the US at launch
Masterverse 2021 7-inch premium figures, first wave tied to Masters of the Universe: Revelation

Mattel’s June 2026 era guide describes Origins as an active retail line sold mainly through Mattel Creations, the company’s collector store. Origins figures make an easy gift for a fan of the 1980s toys. An original 1982 figure is the collector’s choice.

Frequently asked questions

What year did the first He-Man toys come out?

Mattel's first Masters of the Universe figures reached stores in the spring of 1982. The first wave had eight figures, including He-Man and Skeletor, plus Battle Cat, two vehicles and the Castle Grayskull playset.

Did the He-Man cartoon come before the toys?

No. The toys came first, in 1982, with mini-comics packed in to tell the story. Filmation's cartoon followed in September 1983.

When did the original Masters of the Universe toy line end?

Mattel released new waves every year from 1982 to 1987, and the last overseas releases came out in Europe in 1988. Mattel's own era guide dates the original line from 1982 through 1988.

What came with the vintage Castle Grayskull playset?

The 1982 Castle Grayskull shipped with a drawbridge, a combat trainer, an armory with weapons, a trap door, a throne, a ladder, a flag and a laser cannon. Small pieces like the flag and weapons are often missing from loose castles, so check them against a parts list.

Are Masters of the Universe Origins figures vintage?

No. Origins is a modern Mattel line that started in 2020 in a style based on the 1980s figures. It is licensed and fair to collect, but the figures are new toys, not 1980s originals.
